Workshop Detials
Basket weaver Rachel Bower will be visiting Devon this Autumn and is excited to teach us the traditional techniques found in Scottish frame baskets (more commonly known as arm creels) once used by fishing communities along a small stretch of the northeast coastline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These baskets were carried by fisher wives to display fish at markets and on their selling rounds. Learn how to weave your own version of this traditional creel using a distinctive construction method that produces a strong and sturdy basket. In this one day workshop you will be able to weave a smaller version of the traditionally sized creel. This mini version is the perfect size to use for garden produce such as tomatoes and eggs and will incorporate all the same techniques as the larger version. During the day, Rachel will be happy to share stories and insights gathered through her research into this historic technique, for anyone interested in hearing more about the heritage behind the basket. All materials and tools are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own fine 4ft willows if you’d like to incorporate them into your basket. Suitable for participants with some previous experience of working with willow- if you are unsure, please email Rachel on hello@rachelbowerbaskets.co.uk This one day workshop will cost £90pp which includes willow, use of tools, drinks and biscuits. Please bring your own lunch.
